Structured Logging as Financial Evidence
Unstructured log messages are useless for audit and investigation. A line that reads “payment processed successfully” tells you nothing about which payment, for what amount, through which processor, or on behalf of which customer. Structured logging emits every event as a JSON object with consistent fields: transaction ID, amount, currency, processor, customer ID, timestamp, and result code. These fields are queryable, aggregatable, and auditable.
Define a logging schema that every service in your platform adheres to. Mandatory fields include a correlation ID that links related events across services, a timestamp in UTC with millisecond precision, a service name, and an event type. Optional fields vary by service but follow naming conventions. When your compliance team needs to pull every event related to a specific transaction, they query the correlation ID and get a complete, ordered timeline across every system that touched it.
End-to-End Transaction Tracing
A single payment touches your API gateway, authentication service, fraud detection engine, payment processor integration, ledger service, and notification system. When something goes wrong, you need to see the entire chain. Correlation IDs generated at the API gateway and propagated through every downstream call make this possible. One query returns every log entry for that transaction, in order, across all services.
Distributed tracing complements logging by adding timing data. You see not just what happened but how long each step took. A payment that succeeded but took eight seconds instead of the usual two seconds has a performance problem that logs alone might not reveal. Combine trace spans with structured log entries, and your engineering team can pinpoint whether the delay was in fraud scoring, processor communication, or database writes.
Sensitive Data Handling in Logs
Financial logs inevitably contain sensitive information. Card numbers, account numbers, and personally identifiable information appear in request payloads, error messages, and database query logs. Your logging pipeline must mask or redact these fields before they reach long-term storage, because a log aggregation platform with full card numbers is a PCI DSS violation waiting to happen.
Implement field-level masking at the application layer. Log the last four digits of card numbers, hash account identifiers, and strip PII from error context. For database query logs, use parameterized query logging that captures the query structure without the bound values.
